As you try each type of denture adhesive to see which one you prefer, there are several factors to consider, including ease of application and the ingredients list.
“Patients have different needs and comfort levels,” says Barzilay. “A patient may prefer one type over another, and you can choose one based on comfort level, cost and clean-up ability.”
Ingredients
Ingredients vary by manufacturer, but one ingredient many people who wear dentures are concerned about is zinc. An essential mineral for the human body, zinc can be toxic if you ingest too much of it, explains Barzilay. But he reassures that zinc in denture adhesives is only-ever present in low amounts, so if you use denture adhesives properly and avoid overuse, the mineral is less likely to be present in problematic amounts.
“[Zinc in denture adhesives] is not a health concern in general,” says Barzilay. “There’s always going to be some patients who are sensitive to any additive, but the recommendation is to use the adhesive per the manufacturer’s recommendations. Highly sensitive patients may consider a non-zinc based product, but there’s little evidence to suggest that this should be the norm.”
If you’re worried about any ingredients in your denture adhesive—including zinc—discuss your concern with your prosthodontist.
Application
Dentures should always be cleaned before applying a denture adhesive. Application instructions vary based on the type of adhesive, denture location and any specific manufacturer instructions. Only a small amount of denture adhesive should be indicated. “A proper fitted denture by your dentist will only require a very small amount (or no adhesive) to secure the denture in place,” says Barzilay.
Length of Hold
The length of hold varies depending on the adhesive type and manufacturer. However, research indicates that denture adhesives typically hold for 12 to 16 hours.
Cost
Denture adhesive prices vary between brands, ranging from $3 to $10 for a single pack. Barzilay notes that adhesive strips are usually more expensive than cream and powder options.
