There are lots of variations in how people brush their teeth.
With a manual toothbrush or an electric one, sitting or standing up, or with a toothbrush that’s been wet before or after toothpaste has been dispensed.
Now, a TikTok dentist has revealed one thing we’ve all been doing wrong.
Anna Peterson goes by the handle @annapetersondental on TikTok.
She is using her platform of 77.8k followers to educate the public about dental hygiene.
In her most viewed video, which has 4.3 million views, she explains that using mouthwash after brushing your teeth will give you tooth decay, and urges viewers to “stop doing it”.
In another video, which has 2.6 million views, she explains the reasons why you should always brush your teeth before breakfast.
She says the reasons for this are because your mouth becomes acidic after you eat, and because brushing your teeth before you eat protects them from the food.
Now, Anna has explained what we’ve all been doing wrong.
In another viral video that has garnered one million views so far, Anna responds to a comment that says “What? Everyone rinses with water after brushing. Who is leaving toothpaste on their teeth?”
In response, Anna reveals that we should not be rinsing the toothpaste off our teeth after brushing.
“All you’re meant to do is just spit out the excess toothpaste. Don’t rinse it off with water,” the dentist says in the video.
In a previous video, Anna explains that this is because the fluoride contained in most toothpastes is there to protect the teeth from things we consume, so rinsing it off is a bad habit.
The comment section of the video is flooded with thousands of comments arguing against Anna’s explanation.
“I’m so tired of dentists telling us we’re doing everything wrong and then wondering why everyone hates the dentist,” quipped one commenter.

“This is like telling us to wear the left shoe on the right foot,” said another, while a third said “don’t listen to this person”.
Others were quick to jump to Anna’s defence, with one comment saying: “After reading this comment section not only am I worried that people don’t know this, but they are rejecting science,” to which Anna replied “yes I agree”, accompanied by a laughing face emoji.
