University of Sydney PhD student Dr Beata Rumianek is inviting dentists to take part in a survey that aims to investigate Australian dentists’ knowledge of HPV and their attitudes to discussing relevant sexual health topics with their patients, and willingness to conduct HPV screening in the dental setting.
Oropharyngeal cancers are increasing in incidence and are associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. Risk factors include sexual behaviour, high-risk oral HPV infection and poor oral hygiene.
With large proportions of the general population attending dental clinics regularly, dentists may be ideally placed to undertake screening for oropharyngeal carcinomas.
This quantitative study forms part of Dr Rumianek’s PhD project at the University of Sydney, School of Medicine.
