SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Augustana head coach Lindsie Micko has announced the first signees for the men’s swimming and diving program which will have its inaugural season in 2021-22.
“I’m so excited to announce our first signings of the men’s swimming and diving program at Augustana,” Micko said. “This group of young men will be the cornerstone of our program. They are talented young men who are excited about the opportunity to build a program from the bottom up.
“I’m looking forward to working with them and seeing them grow as student-athletes.”
The class includes Aeson Akins, Steven Asmus, Luis Aguilar, Pedro Borin, Jack Johnson, Mason Kauffeld, Kacper Mayerberg, Brady Monson and Juan Salas.
Aeson Akins | Backstroke | Glenwood Springs, Colorado | Glenwoods Springs High School
Akins is a two-time state meet qualifier in the 100-backstroke, placing 12th at the state meet his sophomore year.
Akins plans on majoring in biology while at Augustana.
Steven Asmus | Fly/IM/Backstroke | Hudson Wisconsin | Hudson Senior High School
Asmus holds personal bests of 24.44 in the 50-butterfly and 52.60 in the 100-butterfly. Both of those times came at the WIAA Division 1 Meet. His 100-butterfly time placed him 16th at the meet. Asmus is a four-time WIAA Big Rivers Conference Academic All-Star
Asmus plans on majoring in business and marketing while at Augustana.
Luis Aguilar | Free/Fly/Breast | Milwaukee, Wisconsin | Carmen High School
In his senior season, Aguilar was a state qualifier and placed first in the 100-fly and 200-free at the conference meet. He holds personal bests of 52.05 in the 100-fly, 1:45.45 in the 200-free and 1:00.70 in the 100-breast.
Aguilar plans to major in business and administration while at Augustana.
Pedro Borin | Fly | Joinville Santa Catarina-Brazil | Pedro Borin | Joinville Santa Catarina-Brazil
In his junior season at Joinville Santa Catarina, Borin won the 50-fly at the Jogos EScolares da Juventude.
Borin plans on majoring in engineering physics while at Augustana.
Jack Johnson | IM/Freestyle/Backstroke | Ladera Ranch, California | San Juan Hills High School
In his sophomore season, Johnson placed second in the League Championships in the 100-backstroke and third in the 200 IM. He was part of the San Juan Hills High School team that placed second at the Sea View League Championships.
Johnson is undecided on a major.
Mason Kauffeld | Breast/IM | Washington, Missouri | Washington High School
In his senior season, Kauffeld placed first in the 200-IM and 100-breast at the Gateway Athletic Conference Championships, breaking the meet record in the 100-breast. He also placed at the state meet, placing third in the 100-breast and fifth in the 200-IM.
Kauffled plans to major in pre-dental/biology.
Kacper Mayerberg | Free/Fly/IM | Oswiecim, Poland | Barton Community College
Mayerberg competed for Barton Community College in Great Bend, Kansas. In his time there, he was NJCAA National Runner-Up in the 200 butterfly in 2020. He also placed sixth in the 1650-free swimming in a time of 16:24.16, and had two seventh place finishes in the 400 IM and 1000-free in 4:10.59 and 9:45.60, respectively.
Mayerberg plans to major in finance/economics while at Augustana.
Brady Monson | Free/Fly/IM | The Woodlands, Texas | The Woodlands College Park High School
In his senior year, Monsoon was a two-time silver medalist at the 2021 UIL District 13-6A Championships. He was also a one-time silver medalist and one-time bronze medalist at the 2021 UIL Region IV-6A Championships. Monsoon was also a leg on the Woodlands College Park High School 200 medley relay team that broke the school record. His team also placed fourth at the 2021 UIL Region 4-6A Championships along with a runner-up finish at the 2021 UIL District 13-6A Championships.
Monson plans on majoring in business while at Augustana.
Juan Salas | Breaststroke | Las Vegas, Nevada | Silverado High School
In his sophomore year, Salas placed fourth at the Nevada State Championships in the 100-breast in a time of 1:00.92 and placed sixth at the NIAA 3A & 4A State Championships in the 100-breast in a time of 1:01.22.
Salas plans on majoring in sports management while at Augustana.
