BELLINGHAM — For many graduates, the end of high school often means the beginning of a new life.
That’s especially true for the Gibbs triplets.
After Aidan, Landon and Marissa Gibbs spent their whole life together, at home and academically, the 2021 Bellingham High School graduates will split up for the first time this fall, as each is attending a different college.
“I still share a room with my brother, so one of those support systems will be gone,” said Aidan, 17, who will attend Merrimack College in North Andover. “It’s really scary, but I’m a little bit happy. We do everything together, so it’ll be nice to get out of my own.”
For Landon, who plans to study pre-dental at Assumption College in Worcester, splitting up from Aidan will be difficult.
“I don’t know about Aidan, but I can’t sleep in a room without him,” he said. “We’ve always been together. We just talk. It’s going to be a different experience not being able to turn to him to talk to him whenever I want to.”
As Marissa, who will attend Keene State College in New Hampshire, she’s looking forward to getting out on her own.
“I’m excited we’re all going to different colleges,” she said. “We all discussed we wouldn’t go to the same college because wanted that space and we wanted a chance to be on our own.”
The Gibbs have a lot in common when it comes to school. All three are members of the National Honor Society. They’re all in band (Aidan plays the trombone, Landon the flute and bass drum and Marissa is a percussionist) and all take part in drama.
Aidan said that for all three Gibbs, having one another nearby just motivates them all to be strong students.
“I think there’s something called the ‘sibling effect,’” he said. “If you have siblings, you work together and motivate each other and get better grades.”
Marissa, who was on the girls soccer team, said having her brothers around made things more comfortable, especially when they first entered high school.
“You always had that friendly face in the hallways,” she said. “We could always talk about how our our days were. When you have the same classes, it’s nice to have a friendly face.”
“It was honestly… it just made things easier, even just walking to the bus stop,” Landon said. “I can always lean on my siblings when I was having a bad day and I always had someone to talk to when I was bored. I have my own friends, but we always had the same classes together and we did everything together.”
Aidan said he could not think of one negative about going to school as a triplet.
“Honestly, there’s no disadvantage,” he said. “You have your two closest friends there the entire time, and that’s literally amazing. We’ve always been together our whole lives, it’s totally sick.”
