Bruno Loos Named wins IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Research in Periodontal Disease

Alexandria, Va., USA – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced Bruno Loos, Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), The Netherlands, as the 2021 recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Research in Periodontal Disease. Loos was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 99th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), on July 21-24, 2021.

Loos is Director of the Postgraduate Master’s program in oral health sciences at the Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), The Netherlands. He started his undergraduate studies in Amsterdam, where he completed a bachelor’s degree in dentistry. After that he completed a M.S. in periodontology at Loma Linda University, Calif., USA where he investigated several questions, including the efficacy of non-surgical approaches to manage periodontitis.

Loos further continued his research pertaining to the molecular epidemiology of Porphyromonas gingivalis transmission from patient to patient and completed his Ph.D. in oral biology at the State University of New York at Buffalo, USA. He then returned to The Netherlands to work on the immunobiology of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and oral health. His clinical research focusses on relationships between oral health and systemic health, as well as clinical studies in the treatment of peri-implant diseases.

Loos has presented various papers on these subject at IADR and other national and international scientific meetings. He has had significant impacts on research in periodontal diseases across the spectrum of genetics and immunity and published more than 170 peer reviewed publications. Loos has received a total of 29 awards and recognitions.

The Research in Periodontal Disease Award is generously supported by Colgate-Palmolive Company. One of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, it is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR. The award consists of a monetary award and a plaque, and is designed to recognize, encourage, and stimulate outstanding research achievements in research and its translation through clinical research in periodontal disease.
