3D printing is most commonly used in the creation of dental implants and crowns. The shape, size, colour, and position of the artificial tooth or crown are all precisely crafted to ensure a perfect match for the patients’ smile. Using dental 3D printing, labs and practices can use 3D printers to produce orthodontic models, highly accurate crown and bridge models, castable or pressable restorations, surgical guides, retainers, aligners, biocompatible dental products such as dentures and splints, and more. The broken tooth is scanned and software is used to create a model of the crown. Dental 3D printing has emerged as a novel technique in the dentistry.

Growth of the dental 3D printing devices market is mainly driven by the increasing incidence of dental caries and other dental diseases along with the growing geriatric population across the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), worldwide, around 2.3 billion people suffer from caries of permanent teeth and more than 530 million children suffer from caries of primary teeth. Dental caries or cavities, more commonly known as tooth decay, are caused by a breakdown of the tooth enamel. Moreover, root caries is the major cause of tooth loss in older adults, and tooth loss is the most significant oral health-related negative variable of quality of life for the elderly.

According to the WHO, by 2050, the world’s population aged 60 years and older is expected to total 2 billion, up from 900 million in 2015. Thus, with the growing geriatric population, the prevalence of dental caries is also increasing. This in turn is expected to accelerate the growth of the dental 3D printing devices market. Uses of 3D printing include the production of physical models for prosthodontics, the production of drill guides for dental implants, the fabrication of copings, frameworks for implant and dental restorations, and the manufacture of orthopaedic, dental, and craniomaxillofacial implants. Thus, there is an increasing demand for dental 3D printing devices in dentistry. In November 2019, Formlabs lunched a new 3D printing unit for dental industry. It is designed to streamline the processing of custom dental implants. Formlabs has printed 13 million dental parts on the Form 2 and is hoping to scale more with its next printer for the dental market. Moreover, dental 3D printing devices allows dental practitioners to design the product based on the various factors, such as age, weight, height, and medical history. Such devices are also used to replace crowns, veneers, teeth, and inlays in a single sitting. The popularity of dental 3D printers is increasing due to the aforementioned factors, which in turn is also expected to augment the growth of the dental 3D printing devices market.
