BHOPAL: Rehabilitation of post Mucormycosis patient with maxillofacial prosthesis was performed in state capital. The intervention involved eye replacement (with orbital prosthesis), facial prosthesis of cheek and maxillary process along with obturator of palatal replacement, according to MDS, maxillofacial prosthodontist Dr Saurabh Shrivastava of Bhopal based Smile gallery dental wellness centre.
The patient in her mid-40s, was diagnosed with Covid-19 around end of April. She was admitted in Piparia (Hoshangabad district) and later got higher care at Gandhi Medical College (GMC).
Patient was discharged from GMC around July. At the same time, the patient visited private facility in Bhopal for rehabilitation treatment. Experts who looked at her, said the wond was fresh at that time and went home. Post intervention, patient can now eat properly which is only possible due to replacement of her palate with hollow bulb obturator. Intervention has stopped food from going into the upper nasal and eye part which were removed.
Intervention has also decreased the mucor involvement and frequent contamination is prevented, said MDS Dr Kirti Shrivastava. “It is one of a kind of replacement and required super specialised cranio-maxillofacial rehabilitation,” said Dr Shrivastava. Orbital and facial prosthesis provides coverage to inner tissue and prevents it from contamination. The restored face given back the person a new look normal and in the process.
