WINCHESTER, MA — The following obituary was submitted by the Dragone family.
Jerome D. Murray, DDS of Fort Myers, FL, and Winchester, MA passed away on
September 28, 2021, at the age of 80. Born in Cleveland, Ohio on January 14, 1941, he was the son of the late Joseph and Kathryn (Guerterman) Murray.
Dr. Murray was educated at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio and he graduated from Western Reserve University School of Dentistry in 1967. He continued his advanced studies at Boston University specializing in Periodontology and was awarded his degree in 1971.
Dr. Murray served with the 173 rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam and was awarded two bronze star medals for his service and other awards including the Combat Medic Badge and the Parachute Badge. He received his jump school training in Vietnam with the 5 Special Forces Group.
His professional career was centered in Winchester where he developed a successful practice treating periodontal disease. Beginning in 1984, he pioneered the placement of dental implants. Teaching and lecturing were a large part of his career. He held a position as an Associate Professor of Periodontics at Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry.
Dr. Murray served as president of the Middlesex Dental Society. He was also inducted into the American College of Dentistry, International College of Dentistry, and the Pierre Fauchard Society in recognition of his leadership role in dentistry. His community involvement included membership in Winchester’s Rotary Club where he served a term as president. His many contributions brought him the prestigious Paul Harris Award.
He was an avid golfer and was a longtime member of the Winchester County Club. For the past several years he continued playing golf at the Shell Point Golf Club in Fort Myers, FL where he resided at the time of his death.
Dr. Murray is survived by his wife Eunice Maietta Murray, son David Murray and his wife Tracy of Chagrin Falls, OH, stepson Paul Dragone and his wife Joyce of Winchester, MA. He also leaves behind five grandchildren and a sister Kathryn Metzger of Ohio.
Private burial services will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford, MA.
