One dentist in Massachusetts is challenging patients to a round of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and offering up a free cleaning if they win.

One dental expert in Massachusetts is offering up free cleanings to anyone who can beat him in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Nintendo’s big fighting game crossover extravaganza continues to be popular among casual and professional players, who often take each other on either online or at special e-sports events – though Nintendo has recently started cracking down on non-official Super Smash Bros. tournaments over the past few months.

Meanwhile, it’s not uncommon for video games to be featured at medical or dental offices, as they are sometimes used to pass the time in the waiting room. Nintendo in particular is noteworthy for its collaboration with Starlight Children’s Foundation to provide children’s hospitals with Nintendo Switch gaming stations to make the patients’ usually stressful time there a little easier. One local dentist in the Northeastern United States is bringing gaming to his practice in a different way by getting directly involved in the action, and he’s got the skills to back it up.

SoraNews24 reports that Dr. Shah at Zen Family Dental in Ashland, Massachusetts is holding an open challenge for anyone to take him on in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Should the patient beat Shah, their dental cleaning is free, but if Shah wins they have to tell the world that they were bested by a dentist in Smash. Shah’s challenge has since spread like wildfire across the internet, with Super Smash Bros players in Japan posting about how they would like to challenge him to a round of Super Smash Bros online, or joking that he’ll beat the children so badly they’ll cry double at the dentist. Zen Family Dental has also posted a short video promoting Dr. Shah’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate challenge on its YouTube page, which can be seen below:

Outside of his dental practice, Dr. Shah has a pedigree in video games that goes well beyond playing Super Smash Bros. He used to work as a software engineer before transitioning into dentistry and has even helped make simulators to train US marines. His favorite gaming series is Final Fantasy, which has led some outside observers to playfully speculate that he chooses Final Fantasy VII’s Cloud Strife or Sephiroth while taking on challengers in his office.

Dr. Shah’s open Super Smash Bros. Ultimate challenge sounds like a fun way to get more people to see the dentist, as well as another reminder of how gaming can bring people together in even the most unusual of ways. Whether they win or lose, Dr. Shah’s patients will at least walk out of Zen Family Dental with clean, healthy teeth – and that’s what’s really important at the end of the day.
